Recently I requested the patriarchal blessings of my great grandmother and grandfather. I have a great love of these two wonderful servants of the Lord. I was born on Irvin L. Warnock's birthday and subsequently named after his wife Lexia Dastrup Warnock. It was delightful to read their blessings this morning. There were two passages that stood out to me that I wanted to share.
Grandpa was given 2 blessings. One at the age of about 30 and one at 49. He was given the first by William A. Warnock (His Father) and the second was given by John Dastrup who could have been Lexia's Great Uncle.
The first one has William's shaky signature at the bottom and then he wrote "age 91." How cool is that?
The passage I wanted to share is from the first blessing it says: "Study the best of books. Give time to our reflection and you shall be a ready mouthpiece at times when needed. Cultivate the talents that you have and spend them for the building up of the sons and daughters of Zion and your name shall have honorable mention among many."
I though this was fitting as I have heard so often about his poetry, his books, and how he built the community around him.
Grandma's blessing was given when she as 9 years old by Jos. T. Hoorne. It was hand written by her mother Pauline L. Dastrup.
The passage I enjoyed in her blessing is: "When you have grown older you shall have great testimonies to bear and those things which lend to make life agreeable shall be given unto you in abundance that your home may be one of pleasure and comfort, where the Saints may delight to gather, and because of your praiseworthy course and your deviton to God many shall call you blessed."
I have heard so often of her home, how it was a comfortable place to be and how she did have many "Saints" gather as her husband was the Stake President and had many Apostles stay with them. I agree that many call her blessed and I am one of them.
