Saturday my son John Derek Thornton Jr. was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As we rode in the car together to the church we asked John Derek how he was feeling. "Nervous, I am not sure if this is the right thing. But I want to do this . . . kind of." We talked about how this is a decision that is important and it is his decision. He then talked about being nervous and excited. I told him if his cousin Tyler were he Tyler could baptize him. John Derek replied, "I think this is something Dad's should do . . . I want Dad to do it."
When the meeting started I got up to lead the music. I was overcome by the number of people there to support John Derek. He had his mom, dad, and all his siblings, my sister Annelise, my Parents Jolene and Bill Dew from Utah, Derek's parents, Gerald and Katrina Thornton, Derek's sister KoKo, brother Will and his family, Sister-in-law Shannon and her kids, the Primary President, our friends the Nichols, and the Christensen's, just amazing the love that was in that room. I know that he has quite the cheer leading team for his journey through life. I felt very very blessed.
He was asked to read a statement about the Holy Ghost, we were nervous for him, but he did a great job. He didn't stumble, he did wonderful. Derek and I were so happy to see his reading abilities improve.
Finally it was time for the baptism. He had a huge smile on his face as he went down into the water and was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was happy, I was happy. He had done it, had made the choice that would bring him closer to his Heavenly Father.
After getting dressed he was confirmed. I will have to tease him for the rest of his life that he gave everyone a hug but when his dad directed him to me he would not give me a hug. (Girls have cooties)
I am grateful for the wonderful son I have. I am grateful that he now has the gift of the Holy Ghost to help him throughout his life, to guide him in the way he should go. I am a very proud mommy!!

Patience
"There is also a dimension of patience which links it to a special reverence for life. Patience is a willingness, in a sense, to watch the unfolding purposes of God with a sense of wonder and awe—rather than pacing up and down within the cell of our circumstance."
Elder Maxwell always has an amazing gift of eloquence and imagery. What a beautiful picture to ponder.
