Home and Visiting Teaching

Derek and I went on a lunch date to Costco.  It was nice to just spend some time together.  We tried doing a little Christmas shopping but weren't too successful.  I am grateful for my best friend.  It is nice to feel his strength and his love for me.  I am so blessed.

Today I will continue to read from a talk by President Henry B. Eyring, 1st Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (click here to read/watch/listen.)

"I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God because I have treasured it."--I also treasure the Book of Mormon.  It  is another testament of Jesus Christ.  I feel God's love and His strength when I read this book.  I know it is true.

This is a talk from President Thomas S. Monson, Prophet, Seer, and Revelator of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (click here to read/watch/listen.)

"The bishop of each ward in the Church oversees the assigning of priesthood holders as home teachers to visit the homes of members every month. They go in pairs. Where possible, a young man who is a priest or a teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood accompanies an adult holding the Melchizedek Priesthood. As they go into the homes of those for whom they are responsible, the Aaronic Priesthood holder should take part in the teaching which takes place. Such an assignment will help to prepare these young men for missions as well as for a lifetime of priesthood service.
The home teaching program is a response to modern revelation commissioning those ordained to the priesthood 'to teach, expound, exhort, baptize, … and visit the house of each member, and exhort them to pray vocally and in secret and attend to all family duties, … to watch over the church always, and be with and strengthen them; and see that there is no iniquity in the church, neither hardness with each other, neither lying, backbiting, nor evil speaking.'3"--This is a good description of what Home Teaching is which I talked about on Wednesday.  My husband has always been a good home teacher and I have always been impressed with his dedication to it.  Even the first weekend we met he wanted to spend time with me but needed to do his Home Teaching.  I was very impressed with his dedication to the Lord.

"In performing our home teaching responsibilities, we are wise if we learn and understand the challenges of the members of each family, that we might be effective in teaching and in providing needed assistance."--As women we also have a responsibility to visit with assigned women in our congregation.  I visit 3 women and need to do a better job at discovering their challenges and by making monthly appointments.  I commit to make my appointments by Monday.

WE ARE EXPECTING BABY #5

Yes, you read it correctly. The Thornton Family is expecting a new baby in Dec. 2012. We are very excited. Today we made the announcement to our 4 children and I am sure that each of you heard their screams of excitement. Maddison immediately told us that it was going to be a boy but then after a few minutes decided that we need one boy and one girl. John Derek would like the baby to be a boy so that he can have a brother. Samantha would like the baby to sleep in her room. Elizabeth would like the baby to have brown hair so that more kids in the family would look like her. Then the conversation turned to names. Here are some of their favorites: Elizabeth wants: Sarah, Eva, Evelyn, or Eve, and if it is a boy Phineas or Ferb Samantha wants: Sam or Ammon John Derek wants: Johnny Maddison wants: Cinderella and Johnny So here we go. Taking on a new adventure of 5 children with faith that we are following our Father in Heaven's desires for our family. In this last conference Pres. P

Elizabeth

My darling Elizabeth is so wonderful.  At Church I had the pleasure of talking to different people about the great girl she is.  I was in the mother's room, feeding Michael, and talked to two other moms.  We were discussing the joys and difficulties of raising children.  I talked about how I couldn't do it without my Elizabeth.  How she is my right hand.  She is so good and stepping in and making breakfast or lunch.  She loves to make pancakes with chocolate chips.  She is great with Michael.  I know that I can give him to her and he will be well taken care of.  As soon as we pull into the garage she exclaims, "I'll get Michael!" then leaps out of the car and takes him out.  I don't know what I would do without her.  When Michael was first born and I was constantly feeding, sleeping, and trying to hold the house together she did so much.  She was such a huge help.  She is going to be a great mother some day.  She is so good at talking to children and
